A true overland journey beginning in the UK and ending in the Sahara desert.
UK to Tunisia
March 23rd - April 9th 2023
Day1/2 - A hop across the Channel and France opens up ahead of us to take us via lush valleys, and even lusher cheese, to the land of milk and honey on the Mediterranean coast.
Milk and honey, otherwise known as Pizza and Ice cream! Though I am sure the milk and honey are equally good here.
Italy has not only some of the best cuisine on earth, but is also the epicentre of European history and culture. As we'll soon discover.
Day 3/4 - Pisa and its legendary tower is a first stop before continuing on down the coast to explore the wonders of Rome. 2 nights are a must here to sample even a tiny amount of what arguably Europe's greatest city has to offer.
Day 5/6 - Pompeii and Vesuvius - step back 2000 years and see the ancient remains of Pompeii. A city consumed by volcanic ash for 2000 years before being discovered and uncovered to reveal what is now one of the most fascinating ruins in history.
Mount Vesuvius, the cause of this destruction, towers over the city and makes for a truly awe inspiring stopover.
Day 7/8 - Sicily - this beautiful and magical Mediterranean island has it all. Including the weather. It's really starting to get warm now as we spend a couple of days soaking up the sun, sampling the magnificent food and swimming off any one of the glorious sandy beaches or rocky coves that line the Tyrrhenian coast here.
Day 9 - Ferry to Africa. A few hours from Europe and we enter a whole new world. Prepare for yourself for a wonderful culture shock as Western Europe becomes North Africa. We'll spend a day adjusting and exploring in Tunis itself. The central medina is well worth a wander. Or the unbelievably cute village of Sidi Bou Said lies just on the outskirts of the capital. Impossibly photogenic, with whitewashed alleyways and blue doors everywhere - it kind of reminds me of somewhere?! 🤔.
Or, want some more Roman history? Head out to the ancient ruins of Carthage and do best Gladiator impression.
Now - are you not entertained?!!
Day 10-12 - We'll head south now towards the town of Tatouine and island of Djerba. Here, the Force truly awakens, as we explore the legendary filming locations of Star Wars.
Not a fan? Don't worry, this area of Tunisia is stunning and surreal and there's plenty to do for non Star Wars fans too. Cave houses cut out of the rock below the ground signify the hot temperatures experienced here in the summer. The ancient Berber people lived below ground to stay cool.
Djerba Island is a real highlight, with some of the best beaches in the country too (as well as being home to Obi-wan Kenobi of course)
Day 13/14 - Sahara - no trip to North Africa is complete without a night under the stars in the largest desert in the world. As we head west from Tataouine we'll head into an intoxicating landscape of Sand dunes, oases, mountains and Berber villages. We'll take some time to relax and reflect on our epic journey through two continents whilst experiencing the magical silence of the desert (unless your camel snores).
Day 15/16 - Back up to Tunis, skirting the Algerian border, for flights home.
