Edinburgh & Dunbar - East Lothian coast Picking you up from Edinburgh airport or train station we offer a Free transfer to take you to the beautiful town of Dunbar. The home of the Overlanders. Here we stay in the brand new Dolphin Hostel a stone's throw from the North Sea coast. East Lothian has one of the most beautiful coast lines in Britain and if you arrive a couple of days early you will get the chance to rent bikes and explore the stunning John Muir Way or do a bit of Surfing at Scotland's largest surf school - Coast2Coast.
For those who have made their own way to us here in Dunbar we offer a Free transfer leaving first thing to head North West through the Highlands and on to the ferry port of Oban, taking in the serene Loch Lubnaig en route for perhaps a quick dip to test out the inland waters as well as the seas. Whilst waiting for the ferry to the Hebrides there'll be time to sample some of the best seafood in the land here at the legendary Seafood Shack. A 3-4 hour ferry across the Sea of the Hebrides we journey past the beautiful islands of Mull, Tiree and Coll until our final destination tonight - Barra.
Barra - This is your first real chance to get in the water. Surfing, Coasteering, and Kayaking are all available here for £45/day. Whether you are a seasoned pro or never tried these activities before this is one of the most spectacular places on the planet to have a go! Those of you who are making your own way here you may well be arriving by plane. Meeting you off the plane is something that everyone might enjoy. Barra's tiny airport has a special place in the record books. It is the only airport in the world where the flight times are governed by the tide! That's right, should you decide to fly in for the start of our adventure then you'll be landing on the beach! A spectacular way to start this journey for sure.
Let the real adventure begin. After picking up our bikes from Tony at Barra Bikes we set off on the Hebridean Way. We have 4 days and 3 nights to cover 140 miles from here to Stornoway in Lewis, the most northerly of the Outer Hebrides. In between us there are 7 islands, 2 ferries, 1 night of wild beach Camping on the magical island of Berneray. Some incredible coastal cycling, some even more incredible beaches, lots of coffee & cake breaks, combined with swimming breaks for those brave enough! On top of that you'll also have the chance to spot wildlife such as Otters, Minke Whales, Basking Sharks as well as many different species of Dolphins so keep your eyes open. Always wise on a cycling trip anyway. :)
Waking up in the wonderful Heb Hostel in Stornaway on the Isle of Lewis you'll have all morning to explore the town or take a trip to see the Callanish Standing Stones - painted here by the wonderfully talented Lizzie Vaughan-Knight - before we head back to the mainland on the afternoon ferry. Or you could have a well deserved lie in. The choice is yours. A short ferry then takes us to one of Scotland's real gems - Ullapool. Here we spend a final night celebrating and relaxing either camping or for those wanting a bit more comfort now there is also a bunk house available or even a cottage!!
It's not quite over yet. For those of you taking advantage of our free transfer back to Edinburgh we get to pass through the wonders of the Western Highlands and marvel at Glencoe before flights back from Edinburgh or Glasgow.
